spring lake, michigan

Occupation: Business owner of an industrial supply house called Strong Industrial Supply

Educational Background: Graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelors degree in Industrial Marketing

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in Muskegon Michigan and now live about 15 miles south of there in Spring Lake Michigan. Both cities are on the shore of Lake Michigan.  It is an amazing place in the summer months.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? I started in multi-sports in August of 2004.  I raced in the Accenture Chicago triathlon.  The next year I started racing in Ironman distance events

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? Anything that will make me faster and even most of the stuff that won’t.  Shopping at TriSports.com is like being a kid in a candy shop.

How did you get your start in Triathlons?  I started running in 1999 because I had a list of things to do that had a marathon on it.  I had never ran a road race before but signed up for the Chicago Marathon.  That was my first race and I thought last but I just missed qualifying for Boston.  I decided give it another shot and qualified on my next race.  Ironman Triathlon was also on the list so after building a base with running in 2004 I decided to give it a try or tri.

What is your favorite workout? A friend and I do a open water swim in Lake Michigan and a speed bike down the lake shore once a week in the summer.  When we get back it is all you can do to stand.  I look forward to those days all winter long.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…”  Traveling, snowboarding and waterskiing.  But I enjoy the time with my wife Diane and son KJ the most.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Peter Reid.  I have always enjoyed watching him race in Kona and admired his drive and focus.

If you could have one superhero power what would it be? Speed of course.

Describe your biggest race disaster. I race IM USA in 2005.  I had been sick with bronchitis a month before.  I thought I was over it but after the gun went off I got dunked and started coughing.  I swam from buoy to buoy holding on at every one trying to clear my lungs.  What I hoped was an hour five swim I came out of the water in 1:40.  I lost my chain on the first climb out of Lake Placid and could only run a 100 yards or so before getting dizzy.  I finished but ended up in the medical tent for and hour afterwards.  I got home on Tuesday and went to the doctor to find out that I actually had pleurisy. In the medical tent they listened to my lungs and asked if I went to any of the aid stations for medical assistance.  I told them no because I was afraid they would not let me go on if asked for help.  They agreed that they wouldn’t have let me go on.  It was my biggest race disaster but also my proudest because I didn’t quit.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)? A couple Sam Adams beers in the bath tub.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? I have only had one job so it is the best and worst job I have ever had.  It all depends on the day you ask.

What adjective describes you best? Driven and adventurous

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition?  Have fun training and racing.  Life is short so enjoy every minute of it.
