Ryan Stevens M25-29

flagstaff, arizona

Occupation: Attorny

Educational Background: B.S. & J.D. (William and Mary)

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in Hazleton, Pennsylvania and moved to Virginia for school and then made the leap to Flagstaff, Arizona!

Describe your athletic background. I ran a lot starting in high school and never stopped. I ran in college for one year and took up the other two triathlon disciplines after getting injured running.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? My first tri was in 2003.  I only did one that year. Then two in 2004.  Then several every year after that.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? Still stuck on the TriSports.com EcoLips 85% organic lip balm, mint flavor.

How did you get your start in Triathlons? By signing up for one!  Didn’t know what I was doing…

What is your favorite workout? Long efforts on difficult terrain.  I like riding my bike up to about 9,500 feet with a pair of running shoes on my back for you-know-what when I get up the mountain.  Trying to run fast at 10,000 feet, after climbing up the hill on your bike… it makes racing seem easy.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” I actually enjoy my job, and watching The Office.  And learning new cooking skillz.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Torbjorn Sindballe because I have. He makes you realize that however fast you think you’re cycling, you’re not.

If you could do any triathlon in the World (regardless of monetary restrictions) which one would you do? Ironman Japan in Goto, Nagasaki.

Describe your biggest race disaster. Felt sick from the previous week, swam in low quality water, puked on the bike, hobbled through to the finish…

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? Reflect and make the race mean something.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)?  I eat everything I like before and after races. Maybe I should go on a diet? Nope.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.) No, I’m really careful with my expensive gear because I can only afford one.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? Serving greasy food to spoiled country club kids and then saving their lives after they jump in the pool and sink.

What adjective describes you best? Unstill.

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition? Never trust a skinny cook.
