Occupation:Physician, Anesthesiologist

Educational Background: Too many years

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in the Kansas City area and currently live in Tulsa, OK

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? My first triathlon was in 1983. I have been competing off and on since then. I am currently in my fourth consecutive year back in the sport. I think that is a record.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? I have purchased so many products fromTrisports. I really don't have a favorite. Recently, I purchased some new bike shoes and some “Skins” recovery tights

How did you get your start in Triathlons? I was in college and on the swim team. A triathlon was to be held at a local lake in 1983. I could swim and run so I borrowed my roommates bike and did the race. I ended up winning. I was hooked on triathlons since then.

What is your favorite workout? I like to simulate race conditions while I am training for a particular key race. Last year I had a run course laid out with similar topography to the Kona Ironman marathon course and it was 23 miles. I would do it the day after a long hard ride. It's hot and humid here in Tulsa so the conditions were similar. I would use the same clothing and the same nutrition plan I planned using in the race. I got really psyched up for that run. I would run it at a faster pace than I planned to run the IM marathon and try to negative split it. It hurt, but when I finished it strong five weeks before the race, I knew I was ready to smash that marathon.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” Hanging out with my wife and kids watching movies on the big screen in our basement.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? I've had the opportunity to train with a lot of elite pros so that isn't that big a deal for me. I really enjoy training with my wife, Dana. We have three kids who still are too young to be left alone so we have to train in shifts. We don't get to go out together much. We have taken training vacations to some warm destinations together in the winter and really enjoyed ourselves. Last year we went to Tucson and checked out the Trisports store while we were there.

If you could have one super hero power what would it be? I would clone myself. I would be able to work, train, sleep, take care of the household issues, go to races, and be a family guy much easier.

Describe your biggest race disaster. I was leading race when I got a flat tire on my rear disk wheel. I brought a spare tubular but I failed to bring the angled adapter device to pump up the tire. I was stuck on the side of the road with a CO2 and an inflator that wouldn't fit in the disk notch. It was a looped course and I was only a mile away from the transition area so I just walked back to my car changed the rear wheel on my bike and continued on with the rest of the race.

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? My pre race meal. Hammer Nutrition Perpetuem and a banana and peanut butter. A small cup of coffee too.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don't normally partake of)? I have been known to stop and eat a McDonalds hamburger and fries after a race. I guess I crave the sodium. I am nauseated by the place otherwise.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? I dropped my SRM and cracked the display. I was sick about that for a week.

What is the worst job you've ever had? I was part of the clean up crew after concerts and games at Arrowhead stadium in Kansas City. That was disgusting!

What adjective describes you best? Driven

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition? Stick with it and be consistent. Get out the door and do something everyday if you can. Make your hard workouts hard and your easy workouts super easy. Most folks efforts are in between. If you are really tired don't be afraid to take the day off and recover. Don't forget that rest is an important component to gain fitness and is when the body rebuilds. Don't get into a rut by doing the same workouts every week with the same people. Change things up and try something new to stress the body in different ways.
