Nicole Ramsbey, W30-34

mauldin, sc

Occupation:  Assistant Manager at a bank

Educational Background:  Couple of years of college

Where did you grow up? All over Where do you live now? Mauldin, SC

Describe your athletic background. What background? I fly by the seat of my pants.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? 4 years

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? Trisports.com visor, can’t live without it

How did you get your start in Triathlons? On a dare/bet. I was giving some guys at the office a hard time for not signing up for a 15k run and they started giving me a hard time for not doing the triathlon they signed up for.  I ended up doing the triathlon, and they STILL didn’t do the 15k run.

What is your favorite workout? Depends on my mood

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” sitting on the couch with my hubby and dogs watching a movie. Can’t beat that!

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Emma Snowsill.  She was the first person I started to follow when I became an athlete, and for some reason I have followed her ever since.

If you could do any triathlon in the World (regardless of monetary restrictions) which one would you do? I would love to do long course worlds just for the experience, but I have to say that IM Austria was the coolest tri yet.

Describe your biggest race disaster. An Olympic distance race where I couldn’t get clipped into my pedals for the ENTIRE 26 mile hilly bike ride.  I went through the full range of emotions, positive affirmations, anger, crying, and then just oh well. I did end up finishing the race with a PR on my run. I had some much pent up anger I took it out on the run course.

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? I have long curly hair and I always do double French braids.  No one else ever knows how to do it, so I end up doing it myself.  The process is usually the last thing I do and I don’t fully relax the night before until its done.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)?  Beer. There isn’t anything that tastes better right after a race. I don’t always indulge, but after a tough race, it is wonderful.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.) My husband would disown me.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? Helping my dad shingle a roof.

What adjective describes you best? Determined

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition?  I could say relax and have fun, but I was so competitive when I first started that I didn’t start to relax and have fun until this year. My advice is to never give up no matter what.  There is always someone out there that would love to be doing what you are doing and isn’t able, so make it worthwhile.

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition?  The padding on bike gloves is for the palm of your hand, not the other way around.  If you are zipping up your wetsuit in the front, you probably have it on backwards.  A string bikini will only work so long in the pool before you actually have to purchase a swimsuit made for swimming.  If you don’t have bike pants for winter riding and you are wearing windpants, a rubber band needs to be put around your right leg to stop it from getting caught in the chain and causing you to fall.  Last but not least, if you start to panic before a race and forget what to do . . . . .SWIM BIKE RUN!
