JOSH MARCUS M18-24

boone, north carolina

Occupation: Student

Educational Background: About to graduate from Appalachian State with a BS in History Secondary Education

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in Queens NYC.  I now live in Boone NC

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? Since I was 16. so…….6 years.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? Any Clif Shot. Mmmmmm…..tasty goodness

How did you get your start in Triathlons? I was working at Rockaway beach as a lifeguard and commuting to work on my bike.  My mom encouraged me to do a local spring tri.  I got hooked and my mom has been kicking herself ever since.

What is your favorite workout? Swim: tempo 400s.  Bike: Easy ride in the mountain with my teammates on the App state cycling team.  Run:  long trail run with my dogs.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” Nothing beats a good movie with friends

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Bjorn Andersson. Not because he’s uber-fast on the bike just because he seems like a pretty cool guy.  But it would be an awful week on the bike.

If you could have one superhero power what would it be? To be able to eat as much as I want and not gain any weight.

Describe your biggest race disaster. I’ve come very close to missing a swim start on more than one occasion.

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual?  Truck-driver coffee….chattin’ with folks at the swim start.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)?  As much candy as ten bucks will buy me at the nearest gas station.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.) I don’t own anything really expensive.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had?  Being a water safety instructor. Teaching adults to swim is ten times harder than teaching kids.

What adjective describes you best? Smelly.

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport  competition? Don’t get to hung up on heart rates and watts. Triathlon is about getting to know yourself.  Just unplug and listen to your body every now and then.
