JIMMY ARCHER MPRO

boulder, colorado

Occupation: Pro Triathlete/Coach/Writer/ and model when I can get it the mullet I am currently rocking seems to have thrown a wrench in the modeling gig.

Educational Background: BS Exercise Science, University of Colorado

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? Los Alamos, NM,, currently live in Boulder, CO

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? I did my first duathlon in '86, I have been racing pro since '99, I didn't focus on multisport till fall of '98.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? BMC Pro Machine

How did you get your start in Triathlons? I have always been a "multi-sport" athlete. Since elementary school I have been running, racing bikes in one way or the other, and casually swimming, as well as nordic skiing. I was focused on running in college and did some triathlons here and there. After racing some B level world cup track I started to see the blatant drug use and became a bit jaded on running. I figured I would give triathlon a shot. I now wish I had got into triathlon a bit earlier. I really prefer the multisport lifestyle. I love too many sports to just focus on one. Triathlon is definitely where I belong.

What is your favorite workout? It depends. Long runs and rides are always therapeutic and enjoyable. Nothing is better than a long climb and a quick descent. But, you can't beat the feeling of finishing a tough set of 6x1mile or 7000m of quality in the pool. I hate it at the time but I love the feeling of accomplishment when you finish a workout I was certain I wouldn't make it through when I started.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…”: Movies, reading, love TV at times (the office, family guy, and I really like Gordon Ramsey's show), also hiking, skiing.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Limiting to Triathlete makes it tough. For any athlete I would say, Lemond or Zatopek, maybe Herb Elliot. Triathlete... I would have to say either Ned Overend (is he a triathlete technically?) or Potts (I am really interested in what "swimmers" do when they swim).

If you could have one superhero power what would it be? I've spent years contemplating this question and I don't have a good answer. At this point I like Wolverine's healing power or Mystique's morphing ability. Although I also like the whole Magneto thing that would be good too.

Describe your biggest race disaster. I've had it all, crashes, mechanicals etc. But by far the worst feeling is swimming bad at ITU format races and chasing like a madman to catch up but getting lapped on a short lap bike course and thus being pulled and DNF'd. Nothing is worse than that. It only happend once but never again.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.). No, I am pretty protective of my gear. Although I did have someone else drive into a parking garage with their bike on my car. They were driving by the way.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? Probably being the web editor at Inside Triathlon last year. It started as the best job ever but after some management changes etc. it became the worst ever. I don't do well with constant restriction and indecisiveness.

What adjective describes you best? Enigmatic

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport  competition? Don't do too much too soon. Don't feel like more is better in training, racing, race distance, or equipment. Allow yourself to develop and build to the next level and new challenges.
