Jane Esahak-Gage F45-49

phoenix, arizona

Occupation: Triathlon Coach/swim coach

Educational Background: Michigan State/ Business Degree

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? Grew up in Battle Creek Michigan and currently live in Phoenix AZ

Describe your athletic background. I started competing as an age group swimmer at age 7

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? I have been racing in triathlons since 1993.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? Newton running shoes

How did you get your start in Triathlons? My husband talked me into doing a sprint triathlon that he had also signed up to do.

What is your favorite workout? My favorite swim workout is to do a set of 30 x100’s descending each set down to a 1:20 interval.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy… traveling to new places”.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? I would train with my husband because I enjoy being with him and we also have the same philosophy when it comes to hard/easy days.

If you could do any triathlon in the World (regardless of monetary restrictions) which one would you do? I would do Ironman New Zealand. It is my favorite Ironman and the country is beautiful to vacation around after the race.

Describe your biggest race disaster. Getting hit on my bike during Ironman Malaysia by a race official on his motorcycle who wasn’t paying attention. The accident forced me to stop at 80 miles into the bike ride. I ended up with broken shoulder and collarbone.

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? I like my cup of coffee in the morning.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)?  After an Ironman, I crave McDonalds Egg McMuffins. It is strange because that is the only time I eat them.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.) I left my wetsuit in the back of my car in the heat after the Rocky Point triathlon. By the time I got home to unpack, the wetsuit had melted to itself and all the rubber peeled after I tried to pry it apart.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? At America West Airlines I was cross utilized as a flight attendant. One of the other jobs we did was to load luggage onto the 737’s. During the summers it was tough in the 100 degree heat and lifting all the heavy bags.

What adjective describes you best? Enthusiastic

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition?  Surround yourself with people who have the same interest as you do. Find a masters swim program to help you with your swimming technique. Then find a triathlon coach to integrate all 3 disciplines into an ideal training program for you.
