CYRUS SEVERANCE, M25-29

denver, colorado

Occupation: Regional Business Manager

Educational Background: Int’l MBA – Pepperdine University, BS – Int’l Business & German – Univ. of Portland, Spent 3 years studying in Europe

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? Grew up in Alaska and recently moved to Denver, CO after spending a few years in Chicago.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? This will be my 4th season.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? HED wheels

How did you get your start in Triathlons? I grew up as a runner. After college, I wanted a new challenge so I signed up for an Ironman… The rest is history.

What is your favorite workout? I guess it would have to be the tried and true, mile-repeat session on the track. 6-8 x mile with 400 jog recovery. I usually do this every 6-8 weeks to gauge how training is going and see where my fitness is.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” – HA! Not training… right. Well, on those rare occasions, I like to travel to new places or spend time going out with friends. Honestly, I think times when I’m not training are more stressful than when I am.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? Not to jump on the bandwagon now that he’s the champ, but probably Macca, since he has been successful in both short- and long-course racing as well as non-draft and draft-legal formats. He’s obviously doing a lot of things right and I think he would offer a lot to learn.

If you could have one superhero power what would it be? Teleportation, so I could go anywhere, anytime in an instant!

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? Yeah, I always have to eat Chinese food the night before a race… ideally Beef & Broccoli.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? There’s been too many to count. Can I just say I don’t like working?!?

What adjective describes you best? Driven.

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition? If you want to be successful, be consistent. Frequency and smart-training = speed. Focus on your weaknesses in the off-season and don’t be afraid to take time completely off at the end of the season to allow your body to rest.
