COURTNEY CRUTCHER, F20-24

blue springs, missouri

Occupation: Foreclosure Analyst by Day, Super Homemaker by Night, Swim Coach and Triathlete by Choice.

Educational Background: I have a degree, but I don’t even use it, much to my mother’s chagrin.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in a little town called Belton, Missouri. It was a hick town but has expanded greatly. So much so that a little girl in vanished from the high school this past spring, and no one has seen her since. Bring Kara home.http://www.findkarakopetsky.com/ Currently I live on the east side of the metro Kansas City area with my fiancé Eric, and our two dogs.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? I started multisport in 2006.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com ? Fluid Recovery. There are so many different recovery drinks out there that are billed to be “healthy” but really, they’re not. I have found no other supplement, sports drink, or otherwise that can repair that damage training for ultra distance races have done to my body. You can actually feel a difference. Also, I love the TriSports.com water bottles. You have to have something to put that tasty Fluid in!!

How did you get your start in Triathlons? I woke up one day and thought, “This is me!?” I had been the “most athletic” in high school and even signed to swim in college. However, I couldn’t handle the pressures of moving away at 17 to swim for an education, and I pretty much dropped off the face of the sporting planet. The semester I graduated from college I decided I needed to make a change, and entered the first triathlon I could find. I wanted to do one since I was nine years old, and I decided now was the time. My first race was about six weeks later.

What is your favorite workout? When I’m feeling lazy, an hour long “easy” run. When I want to push it, I take it to the track. Running is my weakness and the track is my enemy. However, I always have some kind of break through in tough workouts.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” Sleeping! I am the self proclaimed Queen of Multi-tasking. I run myself ragged (I would not have it any other way!) so a good day of sitting on the couch with the dogs and fiancé makes me happy! I also enjoy wakeboarding, skateboarding, and watching my fiancé and brother race motocross.

What is your dream triathlon-related vacation? Other than Kona, my dream tri vacation would be somewhere outside of Kansas City. There’s a race in Thailand I was recently reading about that I would enjoy doing. Wherever it would be, it would have to be a place where my friends and family could come along!

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and why? I have to pick two gals: Bree Wee and Liz Fedofsky. They’ve been mentors of sorts for me the last 6 months or so, and they would drop me in a second at any workout (ok, maybe I’d make a minute at masters). They’re really amazing ladies and great inspiration to me. Also, one of my bridesmaids, Robyn, lives really far away but is doing her first Ironman this year. I wish I could help train with her for that.

If you could have one superhero power what would it be? If I could have one power I would have…. the ability of good digestion?  I’m not sure. I’m pretty happy with my own mere mortal powers.

Describe your biggest race disaster. Luckily, I haven’t had a disaster, yet. had a really tough experience post race at QuarterMax in June 2007. Maybe my toenail ripping of at mile 20 in the marathon at IMFL 07. Knock on wood, no major disaster.

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? Check, recheck, and check again my goggle straps. I wear Swedish goggles and I worry about the nosepiece breaking at the start.

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race (that you don’t normally partake of)?  I almost always crave French fries, so I usually hit up Micky D’s or Wendy’s. I would say ice cream, but I partake in that more than I should (sorry coach).

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? (For example, have you driven into the garage with a bike on the roof, run over race wheels, etc.) Not yet. Again, same as the disastrous race.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? Working as a cocktail waitress. Or wearing the chicken suit at a grocery store in high school.

What adjective describes you best? There’s two. Determined, and bossy. In no particular order.

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition? Race yourself first, the course second, and your competition last. Shop at TriSports.com, Freeride Bike and Skate, and drink Fluid Recovery.
