Aubrey Jon “AJ” Curtis, M30-34

bozeman,montana

Occupation: Air Force Reservist (and budding triathlon coach)

Educational Background: Electrical Engineering degree from Montana State University

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? I grew up in the small community Townsend, Montana. After several years in the Air Force, I chose to return to my home state and reside in Bozeman, Montana

Describe your athletic background. No swimming, cycling, or running background before college. After participating in several team sports, I fell in love with triathlon my senior year in college.

How long have you been competing in multi-sport races? 7 years.

What is your favorite product available at TriSports.com? My favorite product would have to be the variety of high end triathlon and road bikes available.

How did you get your start in Triathlons? My roomate in college introduced me to the sport. I was just curious  why he shaved his legs...and bevore I know it, I was shaving my legs and toeing the line at my first triathlon.

What is your favorite workout? Since my short time back in Montana, my favorite workkout would have to be either a Bozeman Masters swim workout, or a group ride with the Echelon Cycling Team around the Wolf Creek loop.

“When I’m not training/racing, I enjoy…” A 16 oz Mocha at one of the fine coffee establishments in downtown Bozeman.

If you could train for a week with one other triathlete who would it be and  why? That is a tough question...I would be willing to train with any other triathlete who would be willing to drop everything and focus on some quality training for a week.

If you could do any triathlon in the World which one would you do? St. Croix Ironman 70.3

Describe your biggest race disaster. Ironman Couer d’Alene 2003 – my first Ironman, and I definitely didn’t eat/drink enough on the bike, and began cramping up in mile 2 on the run (let’s just say it was a long and slow marathon that day)

Do you have a non-negotiable pre-race ritual? Get to the race site early so I can set everything up and relax before the start. In the past, I have had to rush to make it to the start line on time, and every time that happens I forget some key piece of equipment (like strapping my timing chip to my ankle)

What culinary indulgence do you allow yourself after a big race? Hmmm...I guess I would say a Cold Stone ice cream treat.

Have you ever accidentally destroyed a very expensive piece of gear? Absolutely...I once hung my Kestrel time trial bike up on a floor-to-ceiling indoor bike rack. After retruning home one evening, I was shocked to see that the rack had fallen and came down along with my carbon fiber bike. The bike frame was cracked, but thankfully, TriSports.com was able to replace the frame at a discounted price.

What is the worst job you’ve ever had? Any desk job that I’ve had usually isn’t my favorite.

What adjective describes you best? Driven

Finally, do you have any advice for athletes new to multi-sport competition? With the gaining popularity and commercialization of Ironman triathlon, many athletes jump too early into long-course racing. I advise anyone new to the sport to be patient and slowly build the endurance and fitness required to compete that distance without any negative physiological effects. Plus, they will be more likely to return and race again if properly prepared.

Race Results Boise 70.3 - 4:44, 12thAG/80thOA, St. George Triathlon (actually Duathlon – 5k run, 40k bike, 5k run) – 1:52, 12th OA, Spring Meadow Triathlon (Olympic) - Helena, MT; 1st OA; 2:03
